JP GRAZIANO Concept by Jen Serafini and Jack Muldowney

Jen and Jack wanted to collaborate on a branding project together, so they decided to rebrand their favorite sandwich shop, JP Graziano, as a concept design.

JP Graziano is one of the oldest and most recognized sandwich shops and Italian grocer here in the West Loop of Chicago. They pride themselves on a rich history and generations of a family owned business, which is something Jen and Jack wanted to focus on and celebrate in their new concept. The colors lend themselves to a more traditional Italian look, while the clean and simple typography balances out the style by bringing in some more modern touches. They had a ton of fun building this brand out, from postcards to stickers and sandwich wrappers.

Could we just not, please?

Can we stop shaming people of this generation for still living at home? Can we stop shaming people who want to save money instead of throwing every cent we earn into the ‘American Dream’? Can we stop shaming people who choose not to have children? Or who don’t want to get married?

Can we acknowledge that 2 people can be in love and stay together all their lives without a court telling them they should? Can we stop judging people for choices they make in THEIR lives that have nothing to do with YOUR life? Can we please remember that everyone makes decisions based on what their best interests are at the time?

Can we please understand that the previous generations were completely different and then screwed us over and then blame us for their mistakes? Can we stop being forced to live a life that our forefathers thought was the best for us and make our own damn decisions? Can we stop being shamed for making our own mistakes and learning what works for us and not for the previous generation?

Can we? Can we just be fucking human? Can we? Please?

"Our main objective was to re-think traditional packaging methodology. Used as a tool to showcase our ability to think & work beyond convention, we determined from the out-set that drawing inspiration from uncommon sources was essential to the success of the project. Cue the Terpentine: An attractive shape, an airtight seal, something unexpected. This container delivered on all counts, but how to break from the unfriendly, industrial, and for all intensive purposes toxic associations we as consumers have made with that form?

A bright yet soft color palette combined with elegant and approachable serif type helps soften the brand against the harshness of material. A quick sand, prime, and dip in paint helps add some individuality among the products and re-enforces the handmade nature of the product, No two wishbones being exactly the same.”

AKA is not one of those big fancy agencies – they are a small focused design studio that works efficiently to make the most of budgets and timelines through their streamlined positioning and design process. They are a team that believes that “all work and no play makes for a dull day”. While they take their work seriously, they believe you need to enjoy the ride – as the journey is often just as important as the end result.
